The European Commission established the European Artificial Intelligence Office (AI Office) in January 2024 as a central institutional body responsible for supporting the implementation and enforcement of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act). The Office operates within the European Commission, contributing to the coordination of AI governance across the European Union and supporting a consistent regulatory approach among Member States.
The AI Office plays a key role particularly in relation to general-purpose AI models, including advanced and systemic models that may pose broader societal or economic risks. Its responsibilities include monitoring technological developments, supporting the development of codes of practice, contributing to guidance and secondary legislation, and facilitating cooperation between national authorities and EU institutions.
Beyond regulatory supervision, the AI Office also supports the broader European strategy on trustworthy and human-centric AI. It contributes to strengthening the European AI ecosystem by promoting collaboration between public institutions, industry, research organisations, and international partners. The Office also contributes to the international dimension of AI governance, helping promote the European approach to responsible AI development and deployment.
Since its establishment, the AI Office has been actively involved in preparing the implementation framework of the AI Act, supporting technical and policy coordination, and contributing to initiatives aimed at accelerating safe and trustworthy AI adoption across strategic sectors.
The creation of the AI Office represents a major step in the EU’s effort to balance technological innovation with fundamental rights protection, safety, and democratic oversight in the deployment of artificial intelligence technologies.
